Hi! So nice that you are podcasting again. I grew up in the L.A. area. The reason people in L.A. don't walk is that for most of the year it is too hot to walk unless you live one block from the beach. And even then most people walk VERY early in the morning. The reason Californians appear healthy is that they probably spend more time in intense sun than most people, so their skins are darker.
So, either buy a treadmill or join a gym for the toning that you would naturally get in Manhattan. I love all the walking possibilities in Manhattan.
Regarding the financial crisis in California, I wish an attorney would write a referendum and post it on the internet, to the effect that if the legislature cannot pass a budget by the deadline, the Governor's proposed budget will take effect for the year. Since the governor is elected by the populace, he or she should have the power to break the funding deadlock. California is the 9th economy in the world and is part of the economic crisis in this Nation.
The referendum that Californians used to unseat Grey Davis would be very useful if applied to the budget problem.
